New “Smart” I-9 Form Becomes Mandatory on January 22, 2017

After January 21, 2017 all previous versions of the Form I-9 will be invalid. The changes are specifically designed to help employers reduce technical errors for which they may be fined.

An employer will need to use the new form with the effective date of 11/14/2016 for any newly hired employee or if an employee’s work authorization documents have expired and need to be re-verified.

Court Halts New Rules for Overtime

On Tuesday, November 22nd a Texas federal judge put a temporary halt on the Federal overtime rule which was scheduled to take effect December, 1. The rule would have raised the salary threshold from $23,660 to $47,476 on jobs that were to be considered exempt from overtime requirements. With the legal suit, it will likely be some time before this matter is resolved.
